The Job Search Begins…

So now that I have currently don’t have a paying job, I’m still a frazzled mom, I am going to take this time to spruce up my resume.  Here are some helpful tips I’ve found:

10 Easy Steps to a Better Resume - wish I could share this with the people who apply for jobs at my office.

Resume Inforgraph

Also some sites that I have joined that have great tips and articles:

the muse

They have great articles under career advice.  Be sure to check out Resume Revamp.  They also offer free classes such as Kick Start your Job Search.  The classes are free and go straight to your email so that you can check them out when you have time.  This works out pretty great for me, with my littles and all.

Levo League

They are a great resource with good articles, plus you can get in touch with mentors.  You can ask their advice and learn from them what made them successful in their career.

The articles are great and they have a little bit of everything if you interested in more than career advice.  I especially liked the article:  I Make My Living Off a Blog No One Has Even Heard Of.

So right now I am trying to improve my job searching tools:  Cover Letter, Resume, Portfolio, Follow Up emails.  I will post some of the finished products when I am done.

Hope this was helpful.  Please leave a comment if you have other tips to share.  I need all the help I can get.

Nothing is worth it, If you’re not happy

nothing is worth it

I am fortunate enough to be able to live by this quote.  I was not happy in my career, so I just recently put in my notice to find something else.  My husband and I will be able to live comfortably with just his income, but we won’t be able to buy every shiny thing we see.

So I am officially free.  I am still looking for a something I will enjoy career wise, but in the meantime I will be working on nothing but my guilty pleasures.  I have a stack of books, craft projects, designing idea, recipes, and so much more….thanks to pinterest.

So I will be sprucing up my resume, social networks, and just enjoying life.  I really believe that even though I am scared of what might come, I’m also really excited.

Organize now! Jennifer Ford Berry Week 3: Organize Your Cleaning Schedule

Here are the goals for the week:

1. Make a list of the chores that need to be done around the house.   There are a lot of good examples of this on pinterest.  I have so many of these pinned under “organize my life”, I guess this is as good a time as any to actually use my pins.  Check out these for some inspiration:

Example cleaning Schedule

Cleaning schedule 2

Goal 2 is to cleanone chore daily.  This is profound to me because I try to clean everything, get overwhelmed, and give up.

It’s not logical or productive, but I tend to do it always.  Funny how lowering your expectation makes executing it easier.

Goal 3:  Take 15 mins each night and straighten up before bed.

There a several other good tips listed, but these I think will be the most helpful and effective for me.  Cleaning has always been a hard thing for me.  So here’s hoping I can achieve these.  I just need keep remember

Organize now! Jennifer Ford Berry Week 2: Organize your Schedule

This week’s goals are to use one planner for everything and to plan everything in advance if you can.  Also, if your a “TO DO Lister” like me to split them into three catagories:  Daily, Weekly, and Future.

So here is where I am currently.

Planners 5

Planners:  4

Planner 1:  I have a family magnetic calender, which I bought when I tried to make a command center.  I implemented it and it worked for a while.  Unfortunately, like all good things it ends too soon (Possible future organizing project).  My failure in that situation was not maintaining.  So now this is on the fridge to inform me what’s going on in our family.  It also lets the husband make appointments without me, which rarely happens.

Planner 2:  Exercise Schedule.  This is just the group exercise schedule for my gym.  This just ensures that I don’t accidentally walk into a body building class when I just want a little yoga.

Planner 3:  Blog Calendar.  So I’m new to this blog thing.  I want to be organized and consistent.  So I looked up a few tips beforehand.  Tips included a blog planner.

Planner 4:  Personal Planner.  This is basically my progress calendar.  Where I record what I actually did for the day.  Like the exercise class or if I managed to publish a blog.  It has all the other appointments too.  It lives in my ginormous purse.

Oh crap…I spoke too soon.  I actually have five planners.

Planner 5:  My google calendar.  This is the one on my phone where I also put everything in to.

So now just reflecting on what I have and what I use it for, consolidating seems genius.

Organize now! Jennifer Ford Berry Week 1 Update.

Goal 1:  Sleep is amazing.  I had to force myself to stop playing with my phone.  It is crazy how much this little piece of machinery can monopolize your time.    Here is all the apps that I’m currently obsessed with:

good reads icon crunchy roll icon snapchat logo PVZ2 log pinterest icon instagram logo

Don’t get me wrong I still actively use these, just not right before bed.  To help me keep up with how many hours and quality of sleep I’m getting, I downloaded an app.

Sleep Bot

Sleep bot is an app that tracks your sleep, movement, sounds and helps you evaluate why you might not be getting the sleep you need.  It stores your sleep history too.

Goal 2:  Exercise.  Yeah, I got my butt to the gym, thank you judgmental internet.

The Internet personified.

Exercise is an on-going goal for me.  I’ve had a membership since last fall.  I start, but never seem to be able to stick with it.  I’ve always had an excuse like I need a fitness partner or I’m just not feeling that great.  I think that I will do better this time because I’m not only starting off slow, but because I am only relying on myself.

I hate cardio and weight lifting.  This is mostly due to my ignorance on how to properly use the machines accurately.  I end up like this most times.

To avoid this public embarrassment I opt for classes.

Body Jam, Body Flow, Yoga.  These classes are great for beginners.  It’s doable, but challenging.  Also when you feel like giving up there is always a too upbeat instructor to keep you going.

Exercise week 1 has been successful.  I’ve been to two classes, made a couple of friends, and will be going for sure next week.

Goal 3: Breaks.  I absolutely sucked this one up.  I was able to get one of the three breaks, usually in the morning.  That is better than what I was giving myself before.  The timer didn’t work out, because it was just too easy to turn off and ignore.  Oh well, we can’t excel at everything.  I just need to keep working on it.

Organize now! Jennifer Ford Berry Week 1: Organize your mind

organize now

I bought this booking thinking to myself, “Hey I don’t need to make plans so the execution should be cake!”  Right…right?!  Nope not right.  Instead of actually following the very useful checklist within this book, I have just browsed them.  I do have a few attempts at week 1…also.  I’m feeling a little dejected now.  It’s okay that’s all about to change friends.  I attempting it again, under your ever watchful ambiguous eyes.

Welcome to week 1…again, but the first for here.

I am uncertain how much I can list without getting in trouble, so I’m giving you the ones that may be problematic. So out of the 10 goals I am already doing about 4, with out really trying.

I feel that this shouldn’t really be that hard.  Just in case I do have a mini plan, which may defeat the purpose of buying a book with plans.  Oh well.

motherhood sleep

Goal 1:  At least 7hrs of sleep

Concerns:  I am currently working a swing shift.  So I need to get to bed pretty much as soon as I get home to get my 7hrs.  I don’t get to sleep in because I’m still a mom.  My son wakes up and then there is no end to the chaos, plus my daughter has to get to school somehow.  Sadly, I’ve been doing a poor job of it because she has been perpetually 15mins late.  The other problem is it’s hard to go to sleep once I do get home.

Plan:  I may be able to shift my work hours a hour or two earlier (the bonus to where I work).  Also, if I lay off of the caffeine after lunch that has to help.

Goal 2:  Exercise

Concerns:  I am a little strapped for time.  So I hate to spend it on me.  I know I’m speaking crazy, but I can’t get myself out of the habit of thinking this way.  I have learned it’s a mom thing.  We have a lot going on with our extended family right now too.

Plan:  I think if I work out at least once every three days at the minimum it won’t be so bad.  I also won’t feel as guilty.

Goal 3: 2 minute break alone, 3x daily

Concerns:  I don’t even know how I’m going to remember to take these breaks, I don’t have a set routine.  Not only that, but I don’t ever think I am ever really alone.  It’s hard to go to the bathroom without the kids breaking in on you for the silliest things.  You know I’m speaking truth right now.

Plan:  I will schedule an alarm on my phone.  If I can’t go take a break, I’ll just snooze until I can.

Those are my thoughts before starting this whole thing.  Wish me luck.

Executing the Plan

mice and men

How true is this quote!  I’ve have made so many plans to improve my life.  I always start with a list or maybe even a spreadsheet and at times it has spiraled out of control into a 5 year plan with calendar entries.  I also say to myself, “Awesome Penny, you really going to do it this time.  It’s totally going to work!”

I daydream about myself looking back a year from now and being glad that I came up with this fantastic plan.  That’s because I’m extremely happy, because of my well executed plan.

Penny daydream

Unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet.

So obviously planning isn’t my problem.  I could spend hours and even days on planning.  It boils down to execution.  Let me just give you the definition of execution.

Execution defn

It shouldn’t surprise you that it has two meanings.  It can be the beautiful realization of your plans or the death of them.  That’s how its been for me at least.  I’m not saying I haven’t reached goals.  It’s just that I haven’t reached as many as I would have liked.

So i’m starting this blog not only to improve myself by executing some of my plans, but as a way to hold myself accountable.  Lets be real for a second, everyone wants to save face and if it’s out there for whoever to read maybe it’ll make me more proactive.  I am also hoping to get a couple of laughs at my own mistakes along the way.

Here’s the goal.  I’m going to do at least one thing to improve myself weekly.  It can be something simple enough as meditating

meditation pic I really don’t look like this when I meditate, but it was too good of a pic to pass up.

or as complicated as keeping my house cleaned and organized.

mom crazyWhich is challenging because my kids make me crazy.

I know there will be some problems along the way, but I’m hoping that this time it’s going to work.
